Heated Space Out of a Cold Building

Pole barn and garage insulation is a common request outside the city, where Genesee and Lapeer counties have plenty of acreage, detached garages and steel shops. A bare metal building cools off fast on a winter night, and when warm, moist air from a heater, a vehicle or people meets that cold steel, water condenses and drips. Closed-cell spray foam bonds to the panels and framing, insulates and keeps air off the metal in one step.

Why closed-cell on steel

Closed-cell foam acts as its own vapor retarder at normal thickness and adds stiffness to thin panels. HomeGuide lists it at R-5 to R-7 per inch. Two inches on the walls and roof turns a building that loses heat as fast as you add it into one you can hold at a working temperature. Open-cell is cheaper but holds moisture against metal, so we rarely use it there.

Garages attached to the house

For attached garages, the wall and ceiling shared with the house matter most. Sealing and insulating them keeps cold and fumes out of the rooms beside and above. Exposed foam in a garage generally needs a thermal barrier, and we plan for that.

Getting the building ready

Steel needs to be clean and dry before foam goes on. We work out what needs moving or covering, and in winter we may need to warm the space so the foam cures properly. Doors and large openings can be sealed separately.

Pole Barn & Garage Insulation Questions

How thick should foam be in a pole barn?

It depends on how you heat and use it. Many heated shops get about 2 inches on walls and more on the roof. We size it to your goals and put the thickness in writing.

Will spray foam stop my shop from dripping?

Closed-cell foam keeps warm, moist air off the cold steel, which is what causes the drip. That is the main reason people foam metal buildings.

Can you insulate in winter?

Yes, but the space and the surfaces may need to be warmed so the foam cures properly. We plan for that in the quote.

Does a pole barn need a permit for insulation?

Agricultural and accessory buildings are treated differently by different townships. Check with your local building department, and we can tell you what we have seen required.
